What takeoff is

Takeoff is the step where a contractor measures quantities off a drawing set so an estimate can be priced — linear feet of pipe, square footage of slab, counts of fixtures, cubic yards of cut and fill. It happens before pricing and it determines everything downstream: if the quantity is wrong, the bid is wrong regardless of how good the pricing is.

It is also the single biggest constraint on how much work a contractor can bid. Measuring is slow and it can only be done by people who know what they are looking at. When bid volume rises, takeoff capacity is what runs out first — and the work that does not get measured does not get bid at all.

That is the cost worth naming: not the bids you lose, but the bids you never submitted.
